TERPROM® Digital Terrain System

Mr. I. W. Scaysbrook

This paper gives a brief overview of the main capabilities of the software based BAE SYSTEMS TERPROMÃ’ digital terrain system. At the heart of the system, a Kalman filter fuses data from an aircraft's inertial navigation system and radar altimeter with a digital terrain map of the area being overflown. This allows the aircraft to navigate very accurately relative to the terrain. Having determined the aircraft position accuracy within the terrain database the system is then able to provide cues and warnings to the pilot to increase his situational awareness and help prevent inadvertent collision with the terrain, man-made obstructions and wires/cables. Other functionality allows precision aiming of weapons and sensors due to knowledge of the location of any point on the ground relative to the position of the aircraft in all 3 dimensions (latitude, longitude and altitude). Current aircraft programmes are discussed together with some of the future developments planned for the system.
