THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE IRVIN TREESCAPE ASSEMBLY TYPE TS5/1

Mark Howell

The Irvin Treescape assembly type TS5/1 has been specifically designed to meet the requirements of ejected aircrew whose parachute has become entangled in the branches of a tall tree and represents a light weight low bulk alternative to existing devices. The Irvin Treescape assembly type TS5/1 is a device designed to enable a person to descend 200ft (60m) from a secured point.

The TS5/1 was developed under contract to the UK MoD DPA S&AD IPT customer, formerly MAP14 and then MAP 34.

The current design configuration comprises two interconnected pouches. One pouch is stowed into each of the upper and lower pockets of the anti 'g' trouser.

The pouches contain a descent line, descent controller, an attachment to the aircrew and an attachment to the tree. The descent line is distributed between the pouches when stowed.
