VHF Data Links and the Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) using VDL Mode 4 "The New World Standard"
Johnny Nilsson, Swedish Civil Aviation Authority
The paper discusses the importance of selecting the right technologies for the future Communication Navigation & Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) systems based on constraints caused by the laws of physics and ensuring that the selection of future technologies is based on user benefits rather than manufacturers' and communications service providers' interests. An overview of data link systems and their characteristics as well as results from some completed and on-going European Commission sponsored ADS-B projects based on VDL Mode 4 is also presented.
