21st Century Clothing for Aircrew; a Top to Toe Solution
Denise Tracy and Philipp Ostertag
Clothing is an essential part of the equipment of any Aircrew or personnel. One of the most expensive items in most defence systems is the jet plane or attack helicopter. However, such equipment will only function to the best of its ability if the pilot and other crew members are trained and able to work to their maximum performance. As part of their abilities it is critical that the crew are able to concentrate on the task at hand and to be protected from both weather conditions encountered outside of the cockpit and from any hazards related to their function, including any associated with emergency evacuation of the aircraft.
Modern clothing systems can be designed to both maximise the protection of, and to minimise the physiological burden on, the crew. A full system approach considering the items required to be worn on a daily basis as well as those emergency items can ensure the personnel are well protected and free to give their full attention to the task of flying and navigating the aircraft. By taking the whole system into account, as well as considering the performance of each item separately, the wearer is enabled to perform to the maximum of their training and abilities.
