In addition to its mainstay product of aircrew escape systems, Martin-Baker has been developing and supplying crashworthy seating for helicopter crew for over 25 years. In that time, its product portfolio has also expanded to include passenger seating for civilian helicopters, role-specific seating for fixed-wing and rotary aircraft, and military troop seat solutions.
Throughout its involvement in this market, the MBA designs and solutions have evolved to embrace a variety of aircraft-specific requirements, and to incorporate innovations in the designs and materials employed.
Commencing with the first programme on which MBA provided crashworthy seating, through to the latest additions to its product range, this paper will highlight the evolution of the designs for different aircraft platforms, review technology insertions, and consider the impact of the changing requirements of both customers and certifying agencies.
